So you've decided you want to become a lash tech! Congratulations! 100% the first step is deciding that you are ready for this journey, and I know first hand how daunting that can be! Maybe you're unhappy with your current career, you fancy earning some extra pennies on the side or you simply just fancy trying your hand at something new! Well... I'm hoping this blog will equip you with all the knowledge you need to make that search less stressful and give you all the information you need to make the best decision for yourself and your new career!
There are SOOO many course options available to you! I have listed a few below...
Online - these courses teach you all the theory you need and often provide videos of practical and expect 'case studies' in order for you to pass the course.
Group Courses (in-person) - these courses are in person and you'll be taught everything on the day or perhaps a few days. You will be partaking with other learners all in the same position as yourself!
1-1 Courses (in-person) - these courses again are in person. It will only be yourself and the trainer.
So how do you decide which is best for you? Well, you need to consider a few things. A lot of which are based on yourself and how you learn best. Do you learn better watching videos & visuals or would you prefer more discussion and asking questions if something isn't quite clear? Are you confident you would be able to lash someone having only practised on a doll head or watched videos online or are you going to benefit more from hands on support lashing your first live model?
NEVER hesitate to ask any trainer & academy on the layout of their courses/materials and practical assessments etc as this will help you make a better informed decision on what is best for you!
Did you know that if your trainer hasn’t received a training qualification and the course isn’t accredited … you’re not actually qualified?
That's quite a scary thought! As someone who is yet to enter the industry, how do you know the importance of a teacher qualification & accreditation? Its something that could be easily missed but will make the whole world of difference!
The importance of accreditation is knowing that the course has been checked to ensure it includes and offers everything it should. This generally includes the full lesson plan and any course materials. The company offer their seal of approval so to speak so you can book with confidence. Masterclasses don’t require accreditation as they’re made for already qualified lash techs and offer a ‘Certificate of Attendance’
So... is the person offering the course qualified to teach?
While you should consider the years of experience your lash teacher has you should also consider if they have a teacher training qualification. This part is very important because this aspect is different from the profession this qualification teaches the importance to different learning techniques, different styles of teaching and how to create course material and how to best deliver any training.
But lash courses range from £20-£500?
It can seem so confusing when looking at different prices! Generally online courses are a LOT cheaper than in person courses and group courses are cheaper than 1-1 courses.
Online courses don't offer much of a trainers actual time, once the course is complete and live generally only the follow up and additional guidance is given once completed. As opposed to in person training which requires a trainers time and constant supervision.
Generally, a course breakdown is given and this should list everything included in training, for example:
Kits - do you receive a full kit with your course or just a product sheet?
Handouts - are your handouts printed for you or are they online?
What kind of ongoing support is offered?
What other benefits are available to you?
All of the above will add extra costs onto courses but these are all put into place to make your learning experience easier and more enjoyable. So again, you must decide what you really want to be taking from these courses.
As you're entering a new industry or expanding more into the one you're already in please be mindful to be respectful of a trainers years of experience. You can't always put a price on experience and lash courses carried out by individuals who have mastered their craft over the years value their time and know their worth and will price based on that also. A position that we all strive to be in.
I hope this information has helped you gain more knowledge and helps you make the best decision. One thing I have always said and stood by is that if you have a favourite lash tech already or have lots of inspo lashes saved perhaps see if those lash techs offer courses ... as so many do! Learning from someone you aspire to and love can give you a really great start in being exactly where you want to be!
Remember we do offer our own courses and you can find them under the training section of our website! If you are still unsure of anything related to this topic please reach out!
Lots of love, Jode x
